Pixel Art Study

February 2021 Update

In the last newsletter, I talked about my art process. I want to improve my pixel art skills, so I spent this month studying great pixel art, getting tips from artists, and drawing.

I've always loved the pixel art in Batman for the NES, so I spent some time playing through the notoriously difficult game (with cheats!), and looked closely at how the artists accomplished such striking art with so few colors.

You can read through my thoughts here, or just enjoy the screenshots I took:

This month I finally decided to invest in an iPad. I consider myself a minimalist, but I needed to find a way to get away from my computer while still working on things I enjoy.

I spend a lot of time at my computer. I have a full time job as a programmer, which I am lucky enough to be able to work remotely. But that also means at the end of the day, when I want to work on Spook Show Studio, or draw pixel art, then I'm stuck in front of my computer for even longer.

I'm hoping the iPad will allow me to sharpen my pixel art skills away from my desk. I intentionally leave it offline so I'm not tempted to use it as a consumption device :-).

Thanks for following along -- I also spent a lot of time coding this month, but I still have a lot of work to get undo/redo functioning, which unfortunately is not very fun to watch :-).

See you next month!
